SLAM 148 is On Sale Now!

Not Too Much, Not Too Soon
by Cris Jones

As the NBA regular season wound down, our anticipation for the Playoffs reached a collective peak. We knew this year's postseason would be good. With the perfect mix of both experienced squads and new talent, the 2011 NBA Playoffs were destined to be great. But this good, this early?

Who would've predicted that?

Through two Playoff games, Derrick Rose has done everything but seen his name etched onto this year's NBA MVP trophy. The real games in this series have been MVP worthy, as well. Though the Bulls have trailed the Pacers in each contest, Rose would simply not let his team to fail.

The trendy upset pick upon entering the Playoffs were the Portland Trail Blazers, but a 0-2 hole isn't easy to rise out. It appears that Dirk and the Mavericks want no voice of another first-round exit. But who knows what awaits the Mavs when they stride into the unfriendly Rose Garden.

The Celtics have a 2-0 lead with them to New York, but the Knicks have been competitive in each game until the last seconds. A three-ball swish by Melo here, a layup from Jared Jeffries there, and we could very easily give the Knicks up 2-0, ready to sweep. But that's why they play 48 minutes, and not 47.

It is open to see that the Grizzlies are not going to let the Spurs advance to the following round without a good fight. But with Manu back in the fold, the Spurs fear no one. We're thinking that games 6 and 7 will be necessary.

New Orleans looks to be a tough out for the Lakers, but not many outside of the Hornets' locker room envision this series going past 5 games. Can CP3 lead his relatively unknown teammates to a few more wins versus the star-studded Lakers team? Or will Phil, Kobe and company dash a city's hopes and dreams as usual?

We've been damned to see tight competition in nearly all of the opening round series. But some of them just feel like they are leaving to end early. The Heatles, with their flat-out superior talent, are making light mould of the Sixers. Maybe things can vary in Philly, but still the Heat look primed for a league title run, at least.

Safe to say we've been blasted with some great basketball thus far, and hopefully it just gets better from here.
