North Melbourne residents slam 'slum' - Local News - News .

THREE-STOREY student housing planned for North Melbourne has been labeled a "future slum" by neighbouring residents.

The Curzon St application, open to public consultation, provides space for 12 bedrooms but just two bathrooms. The covering also includes but two carparking spaces.

Melbourne Council had received nine objections to the proposition as of last week.

Thomas Delmont, who has lived in Curzon St for 8 years, said the growth was "completely impossible for the local community and its residents".

He said he was concerned both for those to be in the cube and for the street`s current residents.

"The coating is strictly based on extracting the highest possible rental return for the owner whilst giving very little support to the residents within or next to the development," Mr Delmont said.

He said the developer should also lead into score the collapsing international student market.

"There are significant multi-level student housing developments taking office in the North Melbourne area which will add significant pressure to the local area," he said.

"Allowing the construction of three-storey student accommodation when the surrounding residences are single-storey, early 1900s terraces is not in keeping with the aesthetics or heritage of the location."

If the planning permit is granted, the situation would be modified to student accommodation.

But a future application could be lodged with the council to alter the use of the land.

The coating is probably to be decided on by the council`s planning department unless a councillor chooses to address the matter beforea public council meeting.

The proposition has been lodged by Hansen Partnership Pty Ltd, who could not be contacted last week by Melbourne Leader.
